Job Opportunities

Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Program

The Institute of Ocean Sciences (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) in Sidney BC is searching for a postdoc in coastal ocean modelling. The work will focus on the implementation of the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) to the north coast of British Columbia from the shelf break to the heads of the fjords. Applications will include navigation and emergency response preparedness.

The position will be administered through the NSERC Visiting Fellowships in Federal Government Laboratories program. Details on the Visiting Fellows program and the application paperwork can be found at

Postdoctoral Associate or Research Associate Positions

The Marine Ecosystem Dynamics Modeling (MEDM) Laboratory, The School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for two Postdoctoral Associate or Research Associate positions.  The successful candidates will be encouraged to work on either NSF or NOAA modeling projects, with focus on 1) further development and validation of a new unstructured grid, finite-volume ocean model (FVCOM) or 2) applications of FVCOM to coastal ocean and estuaries for the study of the impact of physical processes on the ecosystem.

This position is initially assigned for one year and it could be renewed for the 2nd year based on the performance and availability of research funds.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Oceanography or related fields. For further information, send an email to Professor Chen, (508-910-6388).  To apply, send letter of application, current resume, and the names, titles, addresses and telephone numbers of three references to: Changsheng Chen, 706 South Rodney French Blvd, School for Marine Science and Technology, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, New Bedford, MA 02744.

Graduate Student Opportunities for MS and Ph.D.

The Marine Ecosystem Dynamics Modeling Laboratory/SMAST/UMASSD invites applications for M.S. and Ph.D. graduate programs in the field of ocean modeling. This is an interdisciplinary modeling program with focus on 1) the new finite-volume model (FVCOM) development, 2) coastal and estuarine modeling, 3) physical-biological interactions, and 4) population dynamics related to fishery sciences.

The successful candidate will receive a research assistantship at initial annual rate of $25,000/year with a tuition waiver.  For further information, please contact Prof. Changsheng Chen, or Professor Cowles,  Students are also encouraged to send their applications directly to the Inter-campus Graduate School (IGS) with a copy to Prof. Chen.
